Post-Thanksgiving Shindig

November 28, 2008

Oh boy, today was a blast.  We had a post Thanksgiving dinner at Dad’s, since I wasn’t invited to the one at Uncle Ray’s.  (I hope he’s reincarnated into a mutt.)  Almost everyone that came was a dog lover, and I got lots of attention.

Uncle Ron wrestled with me on the carpet, and I hugs galore from Aunties Helen and Tammy, and Uncle Albert.  They had food and wine, and I was able to have a few bites of manchego cheese.  Uncle Dennis even gave me a parting smooch on the lips, which again grossed out Mom, but at least someone’s man enough to get down with the dawg.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We took a walk in Golden Gate Park today, our usual haunt.  It was a chilly fall day with some people and dogs strolling about.  No turkey for me on turkey day since Uncle Ray doesn’t allow dogs in his house!  Hopefully Mom and Dad will bring me back something juicy.  Here are some pictures of our walk in the park.

Adopting a Mutt

November 23, 2008

We headed to Fort Funston again, this time with another dog added to our pack.  Uncle Albert and Auntie Tammy brought Batman to SF to play.  Batman, a Siberian husky, gained some weight since we first met him, which is good because he was skin and bones when they first adopted him.  Alva ran free like always.  And as usual, I had no, zero, zilch freedom.  At least I wasn’t the only one, Batman was restrained too.

Gee, there are so many purebreds and designer dogs at Fort Funston.  There needs to be more mutts, since there are millions sitting in shelters waiting for homes.  Mom is an advocate for adopting, not buying from a breeder or pet store.

Top 5 reasons for getting a mutt:
5. Buying contributes to the proliferation of backyard breeders and puppy mills.  Dogs are not commodities, we’re your best friend!
4. Millions of dogs, young and old, purebred and mixed, are sitting in shelters waiting for homes.  And every year millions more are put down.
3. Many breeds of dogs are inbred and may show signs of health problems later in life; mixed breeds have no genetic overlap.
2. Shelter dogs are usually spayed/neutered, up to date with vaccinations, and include vet care for the first year.
1. Mutts are more unique!!

We will be forever grateful to whoever rescues us!

Fort Funston II

November 16, 2008

Today was an unseasonably warm day and we headed to Fort Funston again.  And again, I was constrained by that doggone leash!   Cousin Alva was given free reign as usual.  I was super hyperactive, which is why Mom and Uncle Dennis took turns walking and training me.  I have to say, the last thing I want to do is sit while that attractive Weimaraner is sniffing my behind.

We headed down the sand dune to the beach.  The tide was high and there weren’t many people and dogs.  I hate water and stayed as far away from it as possible.  Uncle Dennis tried getting us to climb over the bunker to the other side, but that was a bad idea.  It was a steep climb on wet rocks and we were surrounded by water.  Accident waiting to happen!  So we headed back the way we came.  Then we headed to the lookout point with a spectacular view of the Pacific.  At this point, I’m so damn tired and thirsty I could care less about the view.

After Fort Funston, we checked out dog adoptions on Castro.  Mom wants to get me a little brother or sister that is low maintenance.  Unfortunately, not only did all of those dogs have issues, but the volunteers did too!   We’ll check out the shelter, because desperate mutts like me are the best!

Hanging out in LA

November 8, 2008

I’m here with Mom in LA. I love Santa Monica!  Nice, green neighborhoods and more dogs.  We met Olive, a 7-month old poodle-spaniel mix a few doors down and her owner, Ellen.   Olive had a lot of puppy energy and was jumping all over me.  Playtime abruptly ended when I tried to mount her.

Mom purposely gave me a bath so I wouldn’t offend Auntie Chi, who is not a dog person to begin with.  But our first night here I decided to roll around in freshly fertilized grass.  Something about the smell is irresistable.  Mom got mad because I reeked of cow dung.  Good thing Auntie Chi’s not coming home until tomorrow, so there’s some time for the stench to wear off.
